The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) is signaling a pivotal change in its approach to the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. With the foundational rulemaking phase largely complete, the watchdog is pivoting toward rigorous enforcement and oversight of digital asset firms across the European Union.
ESMA Chair Verena Ross confirmed that the regulatory focus will now tighten around critical operational areas. Key priorities for the coming months include assessing the resilience of Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASPs), scrutinizing outsourcing arrangements, and cracking down on improper reverse solicitation practices that undermine regional protections.
The agency is also spearheading an initiative to ensure harmonized reporting standards across national competent authorities. This move is designed to close regulatory loopholes and prevent firms from exploiting discrepancies in how different member states interpret and enforce MiCA requirements.
Market participants should prepare for more intensive audits as the European regulatory landscape matures. By standardizing oversight, ESMA aims to build a more secure, transparent, and unified environment for institutional and retail crypto participants alike.
