India is set to break new ground in the debt markets this September with a pilot program aimed at tokenizing corporate bonds. The initiative will utilize the Reserve Bank of India's wholesale Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) to facilitate seamless settlement.

State-owned enterprise REC Limited has been tapped to issue the tokenized debt. By leveraging the digital rupee, the project seeks to eliminate traditional settlement delays and reduce the administrative burden typically associated with corporate bond issuance.

The pilot will include a curated group of institutional investors who will utilize the wholesale CBDC to finalize their purchases. This move marks a significant evolution in India’s digital financial infrastructure, moving beyond retail testing into high-value institutional applications.

If the trial proves successful, it could pave the way for a permanent shift in how domestic debt instruments are traded. Financial experts suggest this efficiency could attract greater liquidity and bolster investor confidence in the Indian bond market.
