The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has unveiled a new proposal aimed at sanitizing how online bond platforms market their products. The move follows concerns that aggressive digital advertising might be luring retail investors into high-risk instruments without adequate comprehension of the underlying dangers.
Under the proposed framework, platforms will be barred from using superlative or ambiguous language such as 'high yield' or 'guaranteed' to attract traffic. All promotional material must now adhere to standardized disclosure formats, ensuring that investors have a clear view of the security’s true performance metrics.
A critical component of these rules involves mandatory risk disclosures. Platforms utilizing terms like 'fixed returns' must now pair such promises with prominent disclaimers. The goal is to strip away the glossy marketing veneer often seen in digital debt-investment campaigns.
This initiative underscores SEBI's growing discomfort with the rapid digitization of debt markets. By enforcing transparency, the regulator hopes to minimize impulsive investment decisions triggered by inflated claims, ultimately fostering a more disciplined marketplace for individual participants.
